FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a herniated disc?

A disc herniation occurs when an intervertebral disc protrudes or bulges through its normal space within the spinal column. This degenerative event causes the disc(s) to compress the surrounding nerves or irritate the spinal cord. Dull or sharp pain, muscle spasms, muscular weakness, numbness, tingling, and pain radiating through extremities are often symptoms of herniated discs.

What causes a herniated disc?

A bulge or herniation can be the result of an acute trauma, such as incorrect lifting or from an accident. It can also be caused by normal wear and tear on the body over a lifetime that decreases the overall health of the disc, making it more prone to injury.

What is IDD Therapy?

IDD Therapy is a non-surgical approach to treating a variety of spinal complaints such as: bulging and herniated discs, sciatica, degenerative disc disease, pain radiating into the extremities, acute/chronic neck and back pain, and Fibromyalgia. It is gentle procedure performed via a highly specialized table. The table is controlled by a computer programmed to target the treatment to the specific vertebral spinal segment(s) causing the pain.

What results can I expect from IDD Therapy?

  • Pain relief, even after just a few sessions
  • Shrinkage of disc herniation
  • Increased mobilization
  • Return to an active lifestyle
  • Fewer incidents of back pain and debilitation

What is a physiatrist?

A physiatrist is a physician specializing in physical medicine and rehabilitation. Physiatrists are physicians who treat a wide range of problems from sore shoulders to herniated discs. They see patients in all age groups and treat problems that touch upon all the major systems in the body. These specialists focus on restoring function to people. Physiatrists treat acute and chronic pain and musculoskeletal disorders.

What is Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation?

Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R) also called physiatry, is the branch of medicine emphasizing the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of musculoskeletal and neurological disorders that may produce temporary or permanent impairment. PM&R is one of the 24 medical specialties certified by the American Board of Medical Specialties. Physiatry provides integrated care in the treatment of all neurological and musculoskeletal disabilities. The specialty focuses on the restoration of function to people with problems ranging from simple physical mobility issues to those with complex cognitive involvement.

What Is A Pain Management Facility?

It is a facility that specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of pain problems under the direction of a Medical Doctor. A comprehensive history of the pain problem is taken and a complete physical examination is carried out. Any available previous medical records are reviewed and a description of your pain problem is analyzed. Additional studies, such as X-rays, MRI, CT-scan or laboratory work may be ordered to assist in diagnosing the cause of the pain. A treatment plan is then established that is best for your type of pain. At Advanced Spinal Care of Georgia we offer a multi-disciplinary team of doctors and incorporate the most advanced and least invasive options for addressing painful conditions.
