Physical Medicine

What is Physical Medicine?

Physical Medicine

Once a specific diagnosis is made and a treatment plan is determined, our physcian may offer physical medicine as a treatment option. The physical medicine program occurs in three phases. In the first phase, called the acute phase, you will work with our Certified Athletic Trainer to treat the pain and inflammation. He/She may use any or all of the following physical medicine modalities: ultrasound, electrical stimulation, mobilization, heat, ice or hydrotherapy.

In the second, or recovery phase of treatment, flexibility and strength are developed to get the body parts into the proper positions. The goal of this phase is to return you to your usual work, sports and leisure activities. This goal is achieved through specially designed exercises that rebuild the body. Most of these programs are one-on-one with our Certified Athletic Trainer.

The main goal of the third phase of treatment, the maintenance phase, is to minimize recurrence of the problem and to prevent further injury. This often consists of a total body fitness program designed to maintain body mechanics and increase endurance after the original symptoms have resolved. Most of these programs will be done at home on an ongoing basis.
