What are plain film x-rays ?

X-rays are used very often to help doctors diagnose a multitude of disorders. Your doctor may have requested that you have an x-ray to find out more about your health condition.

X-rays are high-energy radiation that is delivered by specialized machines. Taking x-rays is similar to taking pictures. The x-ray machine beams the radiation through the part of the body to be imaged. After going through the body the radiation is collected on a metal plate, like the negative of camera film.

X-rays are very safe. The dose of radiation given is thought not to cause any significant health risk for most people. Even though x-rays are very safe, a small dose of radiation can harm unborn babies. Therefore, it is VERY important NOT to have x-rays if you are pregnant!
